Former US President Donald Trump emphasizes mass repatriation in the election campaign. German media outlet Deutsche Welle reported that a Republican National Convention had insisted on the idea of ”immediate mass repatriation.”
However, many in the Republican Party were unprepared for such a message. Texas Republican activist Lauren B. Pella is very uncomfortable with this. He said Trump’s talk of mass deportation at the convention, along with words like ‘illegal’ and ‘unauthorized entry,’ was uncomfortable.
He also said that Trump is not talking about sending back all the families who have crossed the border. However, he is referring to the mass repatriation of criminals. Many also believe that Trump and his advisers have different plans. In 1950, the then-president introduced a repatriation policy. Trump may want to pursue that policy by making mass repatriation the center of the election campaign.
The policy, titled ‘Operation Wetback’, has been called by many as ‘racist culpable.’ Trump indicated this in an interview with the press. He will take the help of the country’s National Guard to repatriate. He also said that he would take the help of the country’s military if necessary.
The total number of immigrants in the United States is approximately 45 million. Indeed, many of them do not have permanent legal papers to stay in the country.
One of Trump’s aides, Stephen Miller, gave an idea of what kind of decision he might make on immigrants. Stephen Miller has been working as a Trump aide for a long time. If he wins the election, he will likely appoint Stephen Miller to a senior position in the White House.
According to Miller, the Trump administration can do two things: close the border and deport irregular migrants. To do that, he would have to re-enact the travel ban he put in place before he took office. During his previous presidency, Trump imposed the ban actually on some Muslim-majority countries.
Moreover, he can conduct extensive operations throughout the United States with the help of the National Guard. He can detain illegal immigrants in a camp and put them on planes for repatriation before they can get asylum. In addition, Trump can cancel the country’s 125-year-old rule, which is the right to obtain citizenship by birth.
Democrats say Trump’s ideas and campaign on immigration could attract Latino voters. South Texas is home to a large portion of Latin Americans. The Democratic representative there, Vicente Gonzalez, said voters want to see better border management.
Adopting the right policies can do a lot. According to Vicente Gonzalez, this will probably reduce the arrival of migrants at the border. But the mass repatriation event would be heartbreaking. Meanwhile, Trump’s popularity among Hispanic voters is not low. He previously received 35 percent of those voters.
However, many still disagree with Trump’s campaign. A self-identified multiracial Hispanic, Pela said many of the current government’s policies are not helpful to low-income people. He said that when his Republican colleagues discussed it, children would not be allowed to go to school because they did not have valid documents. That isn’t easy. Pella also noted that it is a very uncomfortable issue for a Hispanic. He thinks we should give these people a chance.
George Franco, CEO of the Wisconsin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said if the more than 75,000 immigrants who do the most challenging work in Wisconsin’s dairy and agriculture sectors left tomorrow, the state’s economy would halt.
